THE COMMUNE
Collective Research and Workshop Series
(2016 - 20)
‘The Commune’ is an ongoing research project conducted with groups of teenagers through private art tuition classes and public workshops, delivered in homes, community centres and holiday clubs across Kensington, Chelsea, Hampstead and Fulham.
Workshops investigate histories of commoning and communal living, both existing and imaginary, to examine their representation through power and property: from Kevin Brownlow’s ‘Winstanley’ to Peter Watkins ‘The Commune’, from Laura Grace Ford’s ‘Savage Messiah’ to the design of WeWork co-working spaces. We also discuss property rights and prices (from floorspace to airspace), the sociopolitical impact of gentrification, planning applications and political organising, to consider their respective limits and possibilities.
Through the course of these workshops, students come together to reimagine and redesign local luxury properties according to their individual and collective visions for contemporary communal living.
